The world needs YOU…

…Now more than ever.

Maybe it’s just me?

Maybe my days of unbridled optimism and idealism are over?

Maybe I’m just getting old?

But it sure feels like our world is pretty f**ked up right now.

So maybe it’s time for all of us to quit freaking out and get out there and do something?!

Wait is this a blog post or a personal therapy session?  Who the f*ck knows?

Sorry about that…my therapist is on vacation.

But seriously…

You’ve probably heard me say that doing well by doing good is a very powerful business concept and quite frankly a great way to get the press to notice you.

It comes down to priorities.

 

 

Companies that prioritize community service and community involvement set themselves apart from the competition, create loyal customers AND create a happy, thriving workplace for their employees.

Win, Win Win!

According to a May 2013 study by Cone Communications and Echo Research, “Corporate social responsibility is no longer an option — it is emphatically and indisputably a must-do.”

In fact, according to the study, “82 percent of U.S. consumers consider corporate social responsibility (CSR) when deciding which products or services to buy and where to shop.”

82%! That’s a shit load of consumers.  And in today’s crowded cannabis landscape (at least here in the western states) you need a way to stand out in the crowd.  Couple that crowded landscape with the inability to use traditional advertising and public relations channels and you absolutely need a creative way to generate name recognition and a buzz in the community.

Community service is one of the best ways to do this.

So on that note, here are a couple of things to consider when creating and implementing your company’s community service programs.

 

 

Discover & prioritize what your community really needs.

Take some time to research what your community really needs in terms of volunteer hours or donations.

Are there low-income residents who can’t afford a medical card?  Are there sick people who can’t afford their medicine?

Are there a lot of homeless youth in your neighborhood? Is the humane society struggling?

Btw, If you’re anything like me than all it takes is one ASPCA commercial and you’re blubbering like a baby.

Can you do a food or clothing drive to help the homeless?  Can you donate the proceeds of a certain product to the nearest pet shelter?

Pick a cause that is near and dear to your heart as well as one that is in need of your support and get your employees on board!

As a cannabusiness owner you may have some restrictions on how you can donate medicine.  But, there is no restriction on showing up at a soup kitchen with your bud tenders or warehouse workers and having a volunteer day.

 

 

Share your story.

Use your website, social channels and a simple press release to let the press and public know that you give a shit and that you’re awesome!

You will have a bigger impact in your community and generate a bigger buzz about your company if your share your story with your customers.  Make your volunteer efforts a big part of your marketing messages and invite your customers to participate.

Trust me, in this day and age of fear and hopelessness; the press loves a feel good story. 

At the end of the day it comes down to what kind of business you want to run and what kind of impact you want on your community.

Chances are if you’re in the cannabis industry you are tuned into the world around you and know that true success comes from more than money.
